Motion Picture – Blue Encore
Apichatpong Weerasethakul
DDMY STUDIO collaborated with Apichatpong Weerasethakul and the Super Normal Team to produce the Blue Encore, an art installation for the 2023 Thailand Biennale.
Blue Encore is an installation of three motorised moving curtains, displayed in a room with natural setting (natural light and wind) at an abandoned school in Mae Ma, Chiang Rai. The curtains are imprinted with paintings by two other Thai artists and are capable of constantly programming themselves to open, close, and move their edges independently of each other. Our team played an important role in technical designing, movement programming and micro controlling.
DDMY STUDIO was tasked with creating a software/system capable of autonomously moving the edges of the curtain silently, slowly, and randomly. The real challenge in that project laid in enabling the edges of the curtains to move independently of each other.
Microcontrollers (Arduinos) were used to control individual motors installed at the top edges of the curtains. These motors can communicate with each other via local network to relay their current positions and collaboratively program themselves to generate their next random pattern. Our team used Touch Designer to put together the final movement designs and assist the microcontrollers.
