Lanna Lunar

Nowhere else Festival, Chiang Mai, Thailand.

The Lanna Lunar is a collaboration with “Prakotkal Studio” that
explores the relationship between the moon phases and human
culture, focusing particularly on the traditions of the people of
Chiang Mai.

In Chiang Mai, ceremonies occur every month of the year, deeply
connected to the moon and seasonal cycles. This project adopts
a theatrical, time-based approach, where participants follow
the journey of the moon, beginning with the light of the actual
full moon in the sky.

The experience starts as the audience encounters the projection
of the first moon on the floor, designed to resemble a reflection
of the sky. They walk along the path of projected moons while
listening to a narrator’s voice describing the ceremonies associated
with each month. Some moons will also appear on LED screens,
accompanied by illustrations inspired by Lanna traditions.

At the climax, a beam of light will be directed to the first mirror.
The shutter in front of the mirror will open, reflecting the light
through a series of mirrors that correspond to the moon’s
positions. Once all twelve months are revealed, a circular laser
will project a tunnel-like space, immersing the audience in a visual
phenomenon celebrating the twelve full moons.

This final scene symbolizes how the full moon has inspired human
history and imagination since the beginning of time, connecting
the past, present, and future.
