Kala Ensemble

DDMY STUDIO also had the opportunity to work with Chitti Kasemkitvatana to produce his work, Kala Ensemble.
A Kala is a manifestation of ‘time’ and ‘death’ across many cultures. There are many myths and beliefs related to these Kalas. The artist researched the many different Kalas in different cultures, especially in the Chiang Sein real-history object museum, and wanted to include high detail digital models of the sculptures.
DDMY STUDIO was approached with the task of designing and digitalizing the chosen Kala face sculptures. The major challenge in this project was the inaccessibility of the real sculptures to scan and study their dimensions. So, our team used a software to create a 3D replica of the sculptures by using photos of Kala sculptures and scanning them. Our team used a technique called ‘point cloud’ to digitalize the 3D replicas.
Using these techniques, our team recreated and digitalized a total of eight different Kala faces. We also used some coding and Touch Designer to animate and monitor the point clouds of the digital faces so they could morph into the next Kala face. Each Kala face will be displayed for about 20 seconds, after which the point clouds will deconstruct, and morph into the next Kala face. Upon completion of all 8 Kala faces, this sequence will repeat and loop until manual termination.
