Konfak: The forest fire detection system
A part of “Art for Air exhibition” at Jing Jai Warehouse
This project is a combination of interactive art and a technology prototype.
We developed a fire warning system. The fire warning system consists of multiple warning units that can communicate with each other. The warning units will be placed inside the forest at separate locations from one another.
If one of the units detects fire in the forest, it can forward the data through the others to the station at a village. The villagers will be able to know the exact location (position) where the system has detected the fire, and they can go to the area in a short time.
This system doesn’t use the internet or cellular signal because they are capable of generating radio signals to communicate by themselves. This technique can be very beneficial for Thailand or any area that does not have cellular signals deep inside its forests.
We exhibited this project by making fire simulators and attaching them to five of the pillars at the exhibition location. Using these simulators, audiences can simulate the fake fires. When the system detects the fire, the data on the position of the fire will be displayed on the screen.
This project has never been field-tested. Design challenges include waterproofing, battery life, and alternate ways to provide power.
We hope this project can inspire innovators or government agencies with a solution for air pollution using simple technology that we can develop in our country.
